Rapunga Whakaaro - Philosophy
All tamariki are seen as taonga and empowered to be themselves - confident and comfortable in their own skin.
Kaiako support tamariki to try new things, take safe risks and learn about their capabilities while learning to respond to challenge and change in a positive way.
Our environment reflects the holistic way tamariki learn and grow, they feel safe in the knowledge that their hauora is seen as important and is nurtured. We value and respect resources made by papatuanuku and place high importance on exploring our local awa, ngahere, and whenua.
We promote and encourage sustainable practises - we are all kaitiaki.
Manaakitanga and whanaungatanga are an integral part of our programme; we recognise tamariki are part of a whānau and wider Community.
Unity and belonging for tamariki and whānau is important as tamariki learn best through responsive and reciprocal relationships in a supportive environment.
Our History
Back in 2005, Havelock had no preschool. Parents then wanted a preschool for the same reasons you do – to give your child a great start in life, time to work and for yourself, and to meet other families. After 3 years of time-consuming planning, consulting and networking with the community, and hundreds of hours of volunteer work fundraising to erect the building, the preschool was born. Pelorus Community Preschool was officially opened in October 2008. The whole community was involved, and they created a preschool that continues to meet the needs of their community and is supported by whanau of tamariki attending and the wider community.
Our Board
Kōhungahunga o Te Hoiere is a not-for-profit incorporated society which means that all our income goes straight back into our preschool to benefit our awesome tamariki. We are governed by an elected board that consists of parents, whānau and sometimes community members. Our board set our strategic plan and vision then ensure we are meeting these within our daily routines and practises.
